DIY Project Consultation

  If you have a question about a procedure, or material, call or E-mail me (please leave a call back number if necessary). Often times I can help you with a simple answer. If I have questions about your job that require a visit to your site we can set up a face-to-face meeting. If you are located outside of Gorham I charge a $25/ hour consultation fee.

Large projects can be both exciting and daunting at the same time.For those major remodeling projects, I will come to your project site and evaluate it, talk you through any specific issues you need to plan for (no you can't remove that bearing wall without an engineered beam!) or concerns you have, and answer questions about your project plans in general. I try to stay within a 30 mile radius of Gorham. The fee for this service is currently a flat fee of $75.00.  

DIY Project Assistance

If you feel you need some help getting started or with specific tasks in your project, I will assist you on a per-hour basis.  Some common things people ask me to do:

  • Demonstrate a technique or task such as coping joints or using certain tools (from grout floats to hammer drills to routers)
  • Complete a specific job such as installation of a fixture or layout for precise cuts and drill holes
  • If you get to a point in your project where you are out of time or in over your head, I can often complete the project for you. 

Shop Support & Custom Pieces

Finish Carpentry is my trade.  If you want a specific piece built, such as a dining room table or built-in cabinets or shelves for a playroom, I have a fully-functioning wood shop and regularly build and install cabinets, bookcases, fireplace mantels, and more.

Prices are on a per-project basis and reflect the expected time investment and materials cost and logistics.

 

Furniture Repair and Refinishing

Many people come to me looking for advice on refinishing or repairing a prized piece of family furniture or flea market find. I can give you tips and suggestions on how to go about restoring the piece, or I can bring it into my shop and do the work there. If I feel it is beyond my abilities (there's some crazy stuff out there!), I can direct you to another professional who can meet your needs. 

 

 

 

 

 

Finishings Installations

Proper installation of mouldings and finished cabinets is a must. A project can be greatly compromised by improper leveling or out of proportion elements. There are many "tricks" and considerations that are never discussed in the home improvement shows. Cabinets do not automatically go up plumb and level, and not every floor is ready for tile. Discussing and, or having the help of a professional can make a big difference in the joy and satisfaction you will gain from the final project. I will explain the steps you need to take, work with you, or, if you're uncomfortable with doing it, I will do the job for you so you can get on with those parts of your project that you have more confidence in.

MOULDINGS are a key detail

Whether it’s antique or new, traditional or modern, moldings are an essential part of the final look and feel of a room. Selecting the right elements and proportions requires a working knowledge of classic patterns and placement as well as attention to detail. I can show you how to enhance your rooms with mouldings as well as how to install them in an efficient and cost effective way.

Referrals

When a project calls for the involvement of other trades such as electricians, masons, plumbers, etc., I can direct you to professionals that I have had experience with and who share the same sense of pride in their work.  I usually know early in a consultation if your project will need a pro's help and will discuss this with you.

Note that I do not charge a fee beyond the project consultation to help you hire a pro and I do not guarantee their work for you.  I do referrals mostly to help my clients work with trustworthy people when they need a tradesperson to do the project.
